A Few ‘After’ Photos

There really is no after. This is a journey with no destination, and I’ll update periodically.

Today is August 15th, 2011. I weigh ~155 and my body fat is ~ 13%. These photos pretty accurately show my current appearance and level of fitness. The race photos are a little over a year old, otherwise these are all very recent photos, over the last few months. The photo at the top of the page wasn’t staged, it was taken by a friend with her daughter’s digital camera, I was fully hydrated and had eaten liberally that day and the previous days (ie, no dehydration or fancy nutrient cycling to artificially enhance muscle definition), and I am NOT photoshopped at all. As you can see, 3 years on a plant based, high carb diet has really turned me into a pale, weak, sunken-eyed, listless blob of body fat and diabetes (all words and phrases I’ve seen bandied about the interwebs to describe vegans).

  1. I’ve just discovered your blog, and I am SO inspired by you and your journey! Thank you so much for your willingness to share, and please keep it up! Looking forward to reading more – thank you, thank you!!

  2. All I can say is: I SALUTE YOU!

I’ve been fascinated and reading through your site. I thoroughly enjoy your approach and I think the best tribute I can pay is to make sure my 16 year old daughter, who confessed the other day to feeling depressed over body image issues (although she is perfectly gorgeous and normal), will read and learn from you. THANK YOU!

  3. I don’t think I could ever go vegan, but I applaud you for it, I read on one of the posts that you have added fish back into your diet.. I don’t like fish except shellfish haha.
But anyways, even with that your blog is a real help for figuring out ways to eat healthier, even for a non-veg like myself. I do think that if I filled up on veggies I would be able to cut out eating too much protein, but lettuce literally gags me after a while, I have to figure out some way to add more cycling and inconsistency when it comes to green veggies, I think lettuce everyday forever could make anyone gag maybe, like anything else.
    Love your blog.
PS: you don’t look anywhere near your age, you look more my age (23) haha <3 I hope I can get my sh*t together and be like you are now when I grow up!

  4. Hello, I love your weblog. Is there something I can do to receive updates like a subscription or some thing? I am sorry I’m not familiar with RSS?

    • Good question, Ellie. I’m not sure if wordpress has a subscription option. You can like my Go Kaleo page on facebook, I always post blog updates there.

  5. OMG you rock! I am you….three years ago. You give me so much hope and encouragement. I gained 90 pounds after having thyroid cancer and three kids. I too was a swimmer. I have lost about 25 pounds after starting to run (currently have an ankle injury and can’t run), started cycling, and FINALLY got back in the water after a 19 year hiatus. Even did a couple sprint tris this summer. I have been flirting with veganism for 10 years after reading books of Dr. John McDougall, which led me to Dr. Neal Barnard, The China Study, The Omnivore’s Dilemna etc. I am now 36 and ready to keep going. I took a raw “cooking” class in May and am now reading the Thrive Diet by Brendan Brazier….it makes so much sense, I’m hoping I can stop flirting and finally commit to a lifestyle change once and for all. If you have any tips on getting the kids to eat like you, i’d Iove to hear them! They are 6, 6, and 3 and havent much cared for the vegan meals i’ve prepared in the past. I’m hoping if I simplify things and do less cooking and more “whole” things theyll enjoy it more. Anyway, sorry for the saga, but I am just SO excited to have found you!!!
