Taking Up Space

TakingUpSpaceI dieted all my life. It was my normal. I was always either on a diet or regaining any weight I’d managed to lose on the last restrictive and unsustainable diet I’d tried. And then seven years ago I stopped dieting. I started eating to support a healthy weight. And over time, my weight stabilized, and I’ve maintained a healthy weight with no arbitrary food rules, no restrictions, no shame or guilt or deprivation.

In Taking Up Space I share my story. I explore the cultural paradigms that keep women in a cycle of restriction and regain. I explain how I broke free and learned to appreciate my body, learned to enjoy food without shame and obsession, learned to give my body the fuel it needs to be strong and healthy and AWESOME.

Taking Up Space is not a diet book. There are no meal plans or lists of ‘good’ foods and ‘bad’ foods. I won’t tell you what to eat or how to eat or when to eat. I WILL give you the tools to figure out how much food you need to support a healthy weight. I will help you form realistic and sustainable habits, habits that will support energy, well being and a strong healthy body. I’ll teach you how to approach weight management from a healthy, sustainable, long-term perspective.

In Taking Up Space, I also discuss disordered eating, how to identify the signs and symptoms, and how to find appropriate treatment.

Regular readers of my blog will recognize a lot of the material in this book. I’ve posted excerpts from the eBook here and there on my blog, and included older posts in the eBook itself. It’s kind of an ‘everything in one place’ sort of thing.

  3. Amber,

Your book is a revelation. Where have you been all my life? This is the most sane, logical and nurturing book about health, diet, weight and exercise EVER. THANK YOU for putting it all into words. I started dieting over 40 years ago at age 13 (and was underweight at the time) and have the voice of the Diet Industry etched into my brain. Time for major de-programming!

With autoimmune thyroid issues comes some food restrictions due to several allergies and sensitivities. But beyond those necessary eliminations, I’m now going to allow myself to “eat the food.” My recent experiment with Paleo resulted in improved bloodwork, but it wasn’t sustainable. I constantly battled hunger, cravings, dips in energy levels, insomnia, and binges – just like every other deprivation diet I’ve ever been on. My new nutritionist has, not surprisingly, added carbs back into my diet and I’m already feeling and sleeping MUCH better. (My previous nutritionist insisted that I was doing Paleo wrong because I shouldn’t be having cravings. Ha! You’re Fired!)

And it’s no wonder I haven’t felt like exercising. I haven’t been eating enough!

Thank you again for shining the light of reason on the crazy-making we can now escape. You are a godsend.

    Namaste,

    Dara

  4. I just read your book and can’t tell you how many “a ha” and “what have I done” moments I had. So glad to have found you and I am so excited to get started on a healthier journey to the healthiest me (after putting my body through hell for over a year). Thank you bunches 🙂

  5. Hi Amber,
I would like to buy your book but before I do that I would like to learn some more about it. Does it maybe have an index? I just would like to learn what topics do you cover and what I can expect. I know that it is about healthy eating but that is all that I know.
    Thank you.

  7. Hi A,ber,
I’m currently reading Diet Recovery 2 and fell upon a site called Eat to Perform and i’m finally ready to admit to myself that i do’t eat enough… i’ve been stuck on the idea that i could not surpass 1200 to 1500 or i’d get fat! I Crossfit and i follow a Paleo way of eating, and that makes me happy… now i just have to get used to eating enough! I’m happy i’ve come to learn so much in the last couple of weeks. I even got my temperature to go from 94 to 96 degrees upon waking up in just 3 days! Anyway, i’m excited about your book… and i was wondering if the Kindle version will be up soon. Let me know cause i want it asap 🙂 Thanks again!!!

  9. Possibly the best $10 I ever spent. Everyone should read this at least once a week! Not only can I see the influence of the diet industry on my own thinking, but how it is also influencing how I am training up my daughter to think about food.

Have you ever considered using LuLu for publishing hard-copies for those who want it? Might be a great option for you 🙂

Thank you so much for contributing this to the world 🙂

  10. Hey Amber – I’m interested in purchasing the e-book version of this, but I have a Kobo, not a Kindle. Is it still possible to buy/download for my Kobo?

Thanks, can’t wait to read it!

  11. So – I bought the PDF of Taking up Space. Love it. I went on line to the calorie calculator and put in a goal weight and all other information requested. My question is – It shows that at my goal weight and activity level, age, etc I can consume just over 2500 calories to maintain this weight. So if I follow this I should be able to get to my goal weight?

This is exactly what I needed to read right now. It is what my instincts were telling me- but put beautifully on paper.

    🙂

  16. Your first step to find out if you are at a healthy weight is to find out what your BMI, or body mass index, is and what your waist size is. For most people, these are good clues to whether they are at a healthy weight.:;”

      • Hi again, it’s been a few hours now and I’ve not received anything? I also purchased your other product at the same time (but in seperate transactions) – the one that was on fb today – beginners training (it was red)… I’ve not received that one either?

        • Is the email connected with your paypal account the one you are looking in? That seems to be what’s happening in some cases, people are expecting the email in the email account they registered for my site with, but their paypal is using a different email account.

  23. Hello, Amber,
Finally purchased Taking Up Space and your weight training program….hopefully I’ll be able to lift the things, eventually and didn’t want to miss out on the sale.

I’ve reloaded my Gmail a coupla times, not finding your email(s?) with the books/PDFs. Checked spam folder, too.

Thanks, I am so looking forward to reading…
    Joan

  24. Hey there – I received the email for the link and was able to view it. I accidentally closed out the window and now I can’t open the link again. Help!

  25. Hey I just bought your Taking up Space e-book, but for some reason the download wouldn’t download…I tried going back to the email link but it won’t let me go to the pdf again. Is there any way I can get it sent again?

    • Larissa, it is a digital book, so you can get it anywhere! If you buy through my site, you will receive an email with a link to download the pdf of the book, and then you can read it on your computer. Hope that helps! 🙂

  26. Hi, I purchased this yesterday. Have checked my PayPal account, and it has definitely gone out. The email address is the same as that which is registered to PayPal – I haven’t received this link to download yet.
