From the Amazon description:

“Can I get an “AMEN!”?! This is so simple, and makes so much sense! If you have to white-knuckle your way down to a weight and struggle miserably to maintain it, how is that “ideal”? About a month ago I found Go Kaleo, started tracking my food, upped my protein and calorie intake, and I’ve lost weight AND inches! All that weight training I’ve been doing is finally noticeable! But the miracle is that I’m not obsessed with food every day, I’m not fighting cravings and feeling hopeless, like if I lost my focus for one minute I’d blow it. I’m not afraid of food anymore! I feel like Go Kaleo has let me in on the “secret” to being healthy… You are changing lives.” ~Denise

In a weight loss world where grueling 1200-calorie diets are the mainstream standard for weight loss, accompanied with long lists of evil foods to avoid, Amber Rogers, aka “Go Kaleo” is the voice of reason.

Being healthy and finding your healthy weight simply doesn’t work when it’s hard. It works best when it’s easy. Go Kaleo puts practicality and sustainability first – two concepts often completely eliminated from popular diets in pursuit of quick, albeit impermanent results.

While most recommend eating as little food as possible and doing as much exercise as one can bear, Taking Up Space advocates finding the MAXIMUM amount of calories and minimum number of paranoid restrictions that still gets results.

In the book, Go Kaleo talks about her incredible 80-pounds of slow, effortless, hunger and craving-free weight loss that never came back – all on a steady diet of 2800 calories a day with a few good workouts a week. No big cravings for carbs, meat, fat, or sweets – as these were things that she was eating in ample abundance every day.

After reaching a healthy goal, what did she do? She increased calories even more only to find that this allowed her to build toned muscle and shed more fat than ever before.

Taking Up Space also contains some passionate and important discourse on getting past the illusions created by fake tans and Photoshop, and realizing that what everyone is increasingly thinking are “flaws” are actually quite normal aspects of human physiology.

This book sets a new standard in approaching weight loss in a lasting way. It is the future of how better health and better bodies will be attained once the rest of the world realizes how counterproductive extreme approaches really are.
“…You can get better, you can get stronger, you can get healthier, you can be MORE. You can’t restrict, reduce, eliminate your way to any of these things. Yes, you can lose weight, but there is a healthier, saner, more sustainable way to do it.” ~Go Kaleo

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you’ll recognize many of the themes I cover in this book. I’ve tied several of my more important posts together to create a more cohesive guide that will give you the basics on energy balance, maintenance of a healthy weight, self respect and self care, and a path forward out of the diet maze.

Be sure to check out my facebook page and the Eating the Food facebook group for support in putting the concepts in this book into practice.

  7. Your first step to find out if you are at a healthy weight is to find out what your BMI, or body mass index, is and what your waist size is. For most people, these are good clues to whether they are at a healthy weight.:;”

  12. So – I bought the PDF of Taking up Space. Love it. I went on line to the calorie calculator and put in a goal weight and all other information requested. My question is – It shows that at my goal weight and activity level, age, etc I can consume just over 2500 calories to maintain this weight. So if I follow this I should be able to get to my goal weight?

  13. Hey Amber – I’m interested in purchasing the e-book version of this, but I have a Kobo, not a Kindle. Is it still possible to buy/download for my Kobo?

Thanks, can’t wait to read it!

  14. Possibly the best $10 I ever spent. Everyone should read this at least once a week! Not only can I see the influence of the diet industry on my own thinking, but how it is also influencing how I am training up my daughter to think about food.

Have you ever considered using LuLu for publishing hard-copies for those who want it? Might be a great option for you :)

Thank you so much for contributing this to the world :)

  15. I am really intrigued. Does this book include a specific plan that I could follow to up my eating, exercise smarter, etc?

  16. Hi Amber,
I’m currently reading Diet Recovery 2 and fell upon a site called Eat to Perform and i’m finally ready to admit to myself that i do’t eat enough… i’ve been stuck on the idea that i could not surpass 1200 to 1500 or i’d get fat! I Crossfit and i follow a Paleo way of eating, and that makes me happy… now i just have to get used to eating enough! I’m happy i’ve come to learn so much in the last couple of weeks. I even got my temperature to go from 94 to 96 degrees upon waking up in just 3 days! Anyway, i’m excited about your book… and i was wondering if the Kindle version will be up soon. Let me know cause i want it asap :) Thanks again!!!

  19. Hi Amber,
I would like to buy your book but before I do that I would like to learn some more about it. Does it maybe have an index? I just would like to learn what topics do you cover and what I can expect. I know that it is about healthy eating but that is all that I know.
    Thank you.

  20. I just read your book and can’t tell you how many “a ha” and “what have I done” moments I had. So glad to have found you and I am so excited to get started on a healthier journey to the healthiest me (after putting my body through hell for over a year). Thank you bunches :)

  21. Amber,

Your book is a revelation. Where have you been all my life? This is the most sane, logical and nurturing book about health, diet, weight and exercise EVER. THANK YOU for putting it all into words. I started dieting over 40 years ago at age 13 (and was underweight at the time) and have the voice of the Diet Industry etched into my brain. Time for major de-programming!

With autoimmune thyroid issues comes some food restrictions due to several allergies and sensitivities. But beyond those necessary eliminations, I’m now going to allow myself to “eat the food.” My recent experiment with Paleo resulted in improved bloodwork, but it wasn’t sustainable. I constantly battled hunger, cravings, dips in energy levels, insomnia, and binges – just like every other deprivation diet I’ve ever been on. My new nutritionist has, not surprisingly, added carbs back into my diet and I’m already feeling and sleeping MUCH better. (My previous nutritionist insisted that I was doing Paleo wrong because I shouldn’t be having cravings. Ha! You’re Fired!)

And it’s no wonder I haven’t felt like exercising. I haven’t been eating enough!

Thank you again for shining the light of reason on the crazy-making we can now escape. You are a godsend.

    Namaste,

    Dara
